- Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia), resulting from either insufficient insulin production or ineffective insulin use. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies diabetes into three main types: type 1 (insulin deficiency), type 2 (insulin resistance), and gestational diabetes (GDM, during pregnancy). Complications of diabetes include stroke, blindness, heart attack, kidney failure, and amputations.

Associate Professor of Community Medicine, College of Medical Sciences, Chairperson of Institutional Review Committee, Bharatpur, NepalDr. Prerna Bansal is Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at the College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Nepal, where she also serves as Chairperson of the Institutional Review Committee. Her work spans a variety of public health challenges, including diabetes prevention and control, tuberculosis preventive practices, and health behaviour interventions. She has been involved in key community‑based screening programs that assess prevalence and correlation of non‑communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in central Nepal. In addition, she has contributed to studies on COVID‑19 morbidity and mortality, as well as adolescent health issues like exclusive breastfeeding and infant feeding practices. Her academic and field work consistently emphasize evidence‑based, population‑level interventions to improve health outcomes in underserved communities.
