Acute Medicine

The Acute Medicine (ACUMEN) e-learning course is a comprehensive programme designed to provide healthcare professionals with an in-depth understanding of acute medical care. Developed by members of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in collaboration with Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare, the course features content authored by leading clinical experts in the UK.

With virtual patients, learners can hone their skills in handling emergency medical conditions, receiving feedback on their performance, and identifying any knowledge gaps. You will learn how to review medical histories, perform virtual examinations, create management plans, and review patient outcomes. In addition to the case scenarios, ACUMEN features knowledge sessions authored by practicing clinicians from the UK that provide learners with a wealth of interactive features, including self-assessment exercises to reinforce learning. These sessions can be retaken as many times as needed, and learners can record their progress online to track their development.

ACUMEN includes real-life scenarios and knowledge-based sessions, which cover 65 major clinical presentations managed by acute medical units. These include emergency presentations, such as the unconscious patient and cardio-respiratory arrest, common symptoms-based presentations, such as breathlessness and chest pain, and less common symptoms in acute care.

On successfully completing the course, you will receive an Acute Medicine Course Completion Certificate. The certificate is a record of completion of the e-learning material and, where applicable, successful completion of any associated summative assessments. It does not constitute certification of a formal qualification in Acute Medicine.
