An endodontist is a specialist who focuses on performing dental treatments like root canals. On the other hand, a dentist tackles multiple procedures, like teeth cleaning, cavity filling and placing sealants, etc. The endodontists treat toothaches. Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with diagnosing, treating, and preventing dental decay and diseases of the dental pulp or the soft tissue in the center of the tooth containing the nerve, blood and lymphatic vessels, and connective tissues. It also focuses on the gum tissues surrounding the tooth.

What Treatments and Procedures fall under Endodontics?

  • Root canal treatment
  • Endodontic retreatment
  • Endodontic surgery
  • Traumatic dental injuries
  • Dental implants

Endodontics originates from two Greek words - ‘endo’ meaning inside and ‘odons’ meaning teeth. Put together, these two words mean knowledge of the inner part of the teeth. Endodontists are experts with a number of dental problems that involve the dental pulp and the respective procedures to treat them. Dental decay takes root when the tooth's outer layers erode, forming holes or cavities that expose the soft tissues to microbes and hot and cold temperatures. The soft tissue is rich and dense with nerve ends and blood vessels. Any infection here can and will result in sensitivity and toothaches.

Is Endodontics recognized as a specialty in medicine?

Highly trained endodontists or dental specialists treat these tissues inside the tooth in myriad and intricate ways. They diagnose and treat complex cases resulting in tooth pain, such as abscesses or infections. While Endodontists perform root canal treatments and other procedures to relieve pain, they’re working on saving your natural teeth. Endodontics is recognized as a medical specialty under dentistry by prominent dental organizations worldwide.

Dentistry and Endodontics in India

Taking stock of the situation at hand, we’d see that the oral care profession in India is faced with dire problems ranging from professional education to practice and employability. We currently have the second-highest number of dentists globally, with 2.7 lakh registered practitioners. Our dentists-to-population ratio of 1,5,000 trumps the 1,7,500 recommendation by the WHO. Medvarsity, Asia’s largest healthcare EdTech company with five lakh plus medicos trained and certified, and over 200 plus courses across medical specialties, has forayed into the oral care segment with a Fellowship in Endodontics course. The course is designed for young dentists, giving them experience and exposure across various endodontic procedures. The course pedagogy ensures comprehensive topic coverage while also providing observer ship and hands-on opportunities. The comprehensive contact program includes simulations for endodontic procedures and hands-on experience for root canal procedures in all significant locations of Clove Dental Clinics across India.
